A lot of people are switching over to the electronic cigarette with the main reason of quiting smoking, but do electronic cigarettes help you quit and are they classed as a smoking ceasation device?
The electronic cigarette has been around for sometime now, with the majority of companies supplying them from 5 top China manufacturers, they all work in a similar way, basically there is a battery which is often activated by the puffing action, but sometimes the battery can be manual, in which the user presses a button just before and during his inhalation. The batery’s job is to heat up a little component within the electronic cigarette called the atomizer. The most modern atomizers are integrated within the cartridge, so the user replaces the cartimizer each time they change the cartridge. The Atomizer heats the air and creates a water vapor, this water vapor then passes through the remainder of the cartridge where the flavoring and nicotine is added, thus creating a vapor that is very similar to smoking a traditional cigarette.
This water vapor that is produced contains a lot less chemicals than those found in a traditional cigarette as there is no burning of tobacco. Although the FDA are not happy with some of the manufacturers as some other harmful chemicals have been found. Now the important thing to remember is that almost every product consumed has some dangerous chemicals in, I read that butter for example is one element away from plastic, and the amount of products that contain traces of antifreeze is reduculas. So the real question should be, does the chemical within an electronic cigarette create harm if used on a regular basis?
The problem with this question is that it is very difficult to answer quickly, and can cost considerable amounts of money that no manufacturer is prepared or afford to pay. Thus should the FDA fork the bill and provide this long term question to the general public. Well no, they refuse to do so and that leaves the debate wide open. Because the electronic cigarette has chemical in that other smoking ceasation devices don’t they cannot be marketted as such.
Although you may see this as unfair, it actually provides an advantage to the electronic cigarette companies, why? Well, if they were to market such a device the cost for new launches would run into the millions, and before long the big companies would have their brand out in the general public. But because they are classed as a smoking alternative, the advertising of such is not allowed! This means that small companies can compete and leaves the market wide open, this is great news for us consumers as we now have a wide amount of choice.
